KIDS STORIES – HOW FIREFLY GOT HIS LIGHT
Stories for Kids: How Firefly Got His Light.
For a long time, there was no such thing as night.
The Sun and Moon are best friends and they never leave the sky.
The Moon cares for the calm oceans, and the Sun shines brightly across the land.
Elephants live in the plains.
The sunlight made his skin very hot.
He tries a mud bath to cool off, but Sun dries it up.
He tried fanning himself but his ears were tired.
One day, he called out to the Sun: “You dried the ground and burned my feet! I can’t stand this terrible heat!”
But Ton didn’t listen, and Moon didn’t say a word.
Owls live high in trees in the forest.
She cannot hunt in the sunlight.
She planned to take Mouse to dinner, but Mouse saw her coming and ran away.
She tried eating berries instead, but they didn’t fill her up.
One day she called out to the Sun: “The mouse can see me in the light, I can’t hunt with you in such light!”
But Ton didn’t listen, and Moon didn’t say a word.
Baby turtles hatch on the beach next to the ocean.
To reach the sea, you need the tide to pull you in.
He tried to swim out but the waves pushed him to shore.
He waited for the tides to come in, but they never came.
One day he called to Moon: “I need the tides to reach the sea, I beg you to take them!”
Moon heard animal sounds and asked Sun if there was any way to help them.
Sun was very interested in Moon and he agreed. Together they came up with a plan.
The sun calls down to all animals.
“For Elephant, Owl and Baby Turtle, Moon and I decided to share
sky. When I rise, the Moon will set and leave the sky bright. When the moon rises, I will set and leave the sky dark.
“The moon will bring the tides each day as it moves across the sky and it will be cool and dark.” Sun continued. “And when I rise, I will once again make the sky bright…”
But we need one of you to tell us when it’s time for us to switch.”
“It can’t be me,” Voi said, “because I’m forgetful.”
And this is a lie.
“It can’t be me,” said the Owl, “for I cannot be trusted.”
And this is the truth.
“It can’t be me,” said Little Turtle, “because I’m just a baby.”
And this cannot be argued.
One by one, the animals collapsed except for the stupid Fly, who was resting under the shade of a banana leaf.
Sun radiated his terrible heat on Dullfly and spoke to him in a booming voice. “Dullfly, this is Sun! Do you hear me?”
“From now on, I’ll let you know when I have to go down, we’ll call it twilight. And you will tell Moon when she sets, and we will call it dawn.”
“I can not!” Dullfly was frightened by Sun’s loud command. “I’m too small for you to see!”
Sun exhaled and shot a beam of light straight into Dullfly’s body, causing it to glow brightly.
“There. From now on, you will be known as Firefly and you will flash your lights to send us signals,” Sun said. And from that day on, Firefly did just that.
So, if you happen to catch a Firefly at dawn or dusk, you must be sure to let it go, because it is it that decides when the Moon raises its tides and when the Sun rises and sets.
