This is the story of the Frog Prince, a fairy tale by Grimm. The Disney adaptation is titled The Princess and the Frog. This edition is brought to you by Miuorini.

Once upon a time, there was a princess. Many suitors came to the palace to win her hand in marriage, but it seemed to the Princess that each of them looked at her without really seeing her.

“They act as if a princess has nothing more than a beautiful crown and royal dresses,” she said to herself, frowning.

One afternoon after one of those visits, the Princess thought: “Sometimes I wish I were younger.” She found her favorite ball from childhood, the one that sparkled when she threw it high into the sun. She carried the ball to the palace courtyard and threw it higher and higher.

One time she threw the ball too high and when she ran to catch it, she tripped over a tree. The ball fell with a thud into the royal well! She ran to pick up the ball before it fell too far, but when she got there, she could no longer see it in the water.

“Oh no!” she moaned, “This is terrible!” At that moment, a small green frog poked its head out of the water.

“Maybe I can help you,” said Frog.

“Yes,” said the Princess. “Please take my ball!”

“No problem,” said Frog. “But first there’s something I have to ask you.”

“What do you mean?” The princess said.

“You should spend some time with me today,” said Frog.

“I’m not sure I know what that means,” said the Princess.

“Spend some time with me today,” Frog repeated.

“Okay, okay!” The princess said. “Now please take my ball!”

“I’m working on it,” said Frog. He dived deep into the well. A moment later, he stepped up with the ball raised high in one hand.

“Thank you,” the Princess said and took it from him.

She turned around to leave.

“Wait a minute!” Frog said. “I promised to spend time with you today!”

“I already did,” she said with a shrug. And the Princess returned to the palace.

That night during dinner with her family and royal advisors, there was a knock on the door. The servant opened the door and found no one there. Frog bowed low and cleared his throat.

“The princess promised to spend time with me today,” Frog said as loudly as he could. “So I’m here.”

“Daughter!” The king spoke from the end of the table. “Do you promise to spend time with this Frog like he said?”

“Something like that,” said the Princess. After a pause, she added, “Oh, okay, come in.”

The servants quickly arranged a new home for Frog and he jumped to the royal table.

The conversation turned to topics of interest in the kingdom. None of the royal advisors knew what to do.

“Father, if I may,” said the Princess. “Maybe we could-”

“Stop!” The king said, interrupting her. “I have enough advisors, believe me.”

“If I may,” said the Frog, and this was the first time he had spoken at the table.

“There is more to a princess than a beautiful tiara and royal dresses.”

The princess stared at the frog. How could this little frog – of all people – understand that?

After dinner, Frog bowed to the Princess. “You did what you said you would do,” he said. I think it’s time for me to go.”

“No waiting!” The princess said, “It’s not too late. How about a walk in the garden?

The frog was very happy. The two of them walked in the royal garden, Frog jumped along the stone wall so he and the Princess were on equal footing and could talk easily.

They laugh about many things. Then, as the sun set, they admired its deep pink-red color across the sky.

The princess said, “You know, being with you tonight is a lot more fun than I thought it would be.”

“I also had a very good time,” said Frog.

“Who knows?” The princess smiled and said. She bent down and gently kissed Frog’s cheek.

Immediately there was a cloud and smoke rising. The little green frog has turned into a young prince! The princess jumped back in surprise, and who could blame her? The prince quickly told her not to worry, everything was fine. Many years ago, an evil witch cast a spell on him that he must stay as a frog until he is kissed by a princess.

The witch laughed evilly and said: “As if that would happen!” But it did!

Now the Prince and Princess can understand each other better. Years later, after they were married, they prepared a beautiful scene for the ball and placed it on their royal table. And when the sunlight shines through the palace windows, the ball sparkles for all to see.
